Street Maintenance Section

Provides a wide range of maintenance functions, which include:

  • Small asphalt repairs ("potholes")
  • Large repairs
  • Crack sealing
  • Slurry sealing
  • After-hours emergency service

There are twenty-four emergency response Small Asphalt Repair (SAR) crews citywide. Each crew works within an assigned district but may be assigned to assist other divisions. Although over 200,000 requests for pothole repair are received annually, not all are potholes. The Bureau's goal is to repair every pothole within the next business day. However, during inclimate weather the response time may be impacted. SAR crews will also make temporary asphalt repairs to sidewalk offsets caused by tree roots, slot maintenance holes after they are readjusted following resurfacing operations, and respond to emergencies as they occur.

There are currently three Large Asphalt Repair crews that repair streets after water main ruptures. When permanent water main repairs are completed by the Department of Water and Power these divisions will repair the effected roadway. Over 100 water main ruptures are completed annually.

Four divisions perform crack sealing operations throughout the city. Normal cracking that occurs over time in asphalt streets are cleaned and sealed to prevent moisture from entering the sub base of the street. The city normally seals over 100 miles of streets annually.

Slurry Seal is a maintenance operation that applies a liquid asphalt material to the wearing surface of the street. This operation is usually applied to residential streets that have been resurfaced within the past three to six years. This function reseals the street and greatly extends the life of the wearing surface. Slurry seal is a very cost effective maintenance process. Normal slurry programs will include 65,521,092 square feet or 400 miles annually citywide.

All divisions within the Street Maintenance Division respond to emergencies that occur citywide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Depending upon the nature of the event, crews may be required to work all night or weekends. Management and Supervisory personnel within the section will staff the City's Emergency Operations Center as well as the Bureau of Street Services Emergency Operations Center, 24 hours per day, until emergency situation is over.
