School Safety Prosecutor Program
Education and school safety have been a top priority for
the City Attorney since he took office. In an effort to
better understand the community’s school safety concerns,
the City Attorney hosted the first in a series of public
hearings to address safety challenges around schools. Educators,
law enforcement, parents, students and concerned residents
explored solutions to crime, gang activity and truancy
in school neighborhoods.
Joined by Councilwoman Wendy Greuel, LAPD Assistant Chief
George Gascon and LAUSD School Board Member Julie Korenstein,
City Attorney Delgadillo engaged in a conversation with
participants about issues that face the neighborhoods around
schools and listened to ideas for strengthening the safety
of our school communities.
As a result of the hearing, the City Attorney strengthened
his commitment to continue to build on the school safety
ideas the community shared at the hearing. In addition
to programs already in place, the City Attorney introduced
the School Safety Prosecutor Program. Modeled after the
successful Neighborhood Prosecutor Program, attorneys would
be focused on eradicating crime in areas immediately surrounding
our schools. Preliminary support for this program
has been provided by the Los Angeles City Council.
